The 2009 Scottish Fisheries Museum Internship
The Scottish Fisheries Museum (www.scotfishmuseum.org) has generously offered to host two Williams-Mystic alumni for a museum internship for an approximately two-week period between early-May and mid-September of 2009. The Scottish Fisheries Museum is set on the waterfront in the historic and beautiful town of Anstruther, Scotland, beside the North Sea. Anstruther is two and a half hours from Edinburgh by bus, ten minutes from The University of St Andrews, and twenty minutes to the historic whaling port of Dundee, now home to Scott’s Discovery. Interns may travel independently around Scotland before or after the internship. The internship will be self-tailored based on the schedule and specific interests of the interns. It will certainly include time sailing aboard the museum’s one-hundred-year old herring drifter, Reaper, and can also include participation with historic boat maintenance, museum interpretation, exhibit creation for the public, and/or research with the Scottish Fisheries Museum’s vessels, artifacts, and photographs.
The 2009 internship is unpaid, but Williams-Mystic staff may be able to help identify potential grant-funding bodies. Interns will have to pay airfare, but once in Scotland, housing in Anstruther will be provided, as will some meals and transportation. Interns may stay aboard the Reaper or at one of the homes of the Reaper’s crew. The volunteer crew of the Reaper is a welcoming, good-humored group of people, with an extraordinary range of skills and backgrounds, e.g. boat carpentry, ship preservation, marine mammal research, commercial fishing, etc. The Reaper plans to sail to the West Coast of Scotland in May, but this is still in the planning stages at the time of advertisement (5 December 08). Access to the libraries and collections of the University of St Andrews and the National Library of Scotland can be arranged.
Applicants for the 2009 Scottish Fisheries Museum Internship must be an alumnus of The Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport, but do not need to be currently enrolled as a student. By Friday, February 13, 2009, applicants should email an approximately 300-word statement about why they would like to participate and, if applicable, how this will help further their career or research. Within the same document, they should include a one-page resume and the names and contact information of three references; one of these references should be a member of the Williams-Mystic faculty or staff.
Questions and applications should be directed to Richard King (richard.king@mysticseaport.org).
